Aspirating and Air Sampling Systems

Air sampling or aspirating systems use a piped network featuring sampling holes. Air is drawn through the holes and pipes and into sampling chambers where the air is analysed for early indications of smoke or fire.

Whilst air sampling systems can be used as stand-alone items to monitor atmospheric quality, they are most commonly used in association with gaseous and water mist fire protection systems.
These systems are highly sensitive, in many cases up to more than 200 times more sensitive than a standard smoke detector.  They are highly valuable in helping to protect expensive equipment and data as well as people by enabling early detection of a problem.

Early awareness can often prevent the need for over escalated disruption, saving businesses significant time and money. For example it can prevent the need to raise a general alarm for a whole building, or unnecessary release of fire suppressing systems, or business disruption such as the shutdown of air conditioning within a server room (which can lead to unnecessary overheating and business disruption).

Fire Safety UK work most commonly with Vesda and Stratos Airsense HSSD air sampling equipment / systems. All the aspirating, air sampling and smoke detection systems we design, install and commission are to British Standards BS EN 54-20:2006 and BS 5839.
